Are there electronic or MIDI woodwind instruments?

Densoon assisted fingering bassoon with electronic key system

Electronic and MIDI instruments have become common in the world of keyboards and guitars, but many players are surprised to learn that modern technology has also started to appear in the woodwind family. While traditional instruments like the flute, clarinet and bassoon have changed very little over the years, new designs are beginning to combine acoustic sound with electronic control.

Some electronic woodwind instruments are designed mainly for silent practice or for use with recording software. These instruments often work as MIDI controllers, allowing the player to trigger different sounds while using familiar fingering patterns. They can be useful for composers, studio musicians, or players who want to practise without the volume of a full acoustic instrument.

At the same time, instrument makers have also started developing hybrid designs that keep the natural sound of a traditional woodwind instrument while using modern technology to make the instrument easier to play. This is particularly useful for larger and more complex instruments, where the mechanical system can make learning more difficult.

One example is the Densoon assisted fingering bassoon, which combines the acoustic sound of a bassoon with a mechatronic key system. The instrument uses servo-assisted keywork to make fingering more intuitive and reduce the physical effort needed to play, while still allowing the player to perform standard bassoon repertoire. A MIDI-enabled version is also available, making it possible to use the instrument in recording or amplified settings.

For players who are curious about modern woodwind instruments, the Densoon assisted fingering bassoon is available for play test at our Muswell Hill workshop, and we are always happy to explain how these new designs compare to traditional instruments.
