An easier alternative to the bassoon.
Meet the Densoon - all the depth of a bassoon, without the complexity.
What Is The Densoon?
The Densoon is a state-of-the-art assisted fingering bassoon designed to make bassoon playing more accessible than ever before.
It looks and sounds like a traditional bassoon, but its keywork is enhanced with integrated servo motors connected to a discreet onboard CPU. This intelligent system mechanically assists each key press, making playing smoother, more consistent, and significantly easier to control.
As a result, scale patterns and fingerings that are technically demanding on a conventional bassoon become far more intuitive — aligning more closely with the fingering systems of recorder, flute, and saxophone.
Typically, players are able to get comfortable with the instrument within an hour of picking it up.
Available in both acoustic and MIDI versions, the Densoon bridges classical tradition with modern innovation — opening new creative possibilities without years of technical study.
A Modern Instrument, Born In Italy
The Densoon is designed and built in Italy — a country with a deep and enduring tradition of instrument making.
From the master luthiers of Cremona to generations of wind and brass craftsmen, Italy has shaped the sound of classical music for centuries. Names like Stradivari and Amati became synonymous with precision, artistry, and innovation.
The Densoon carries that same spirit forward.
Innovated and designed by a bassoon maestro, and assembled and finished in Italy, the instrument reflects both artistic sensitivity and technical precision. Its development has been informed by collaboration with principal orchestral players — including musicians associated with Teatro alla Scala in Milan — alongside conservatoire-level educators. This ensures the instrument responds to the real demands of professional performance and teaching.
Developed by MAWIP in Milan, it combines Italian craftsmanship with advanced mechatronic engineering — respecting the acoustic legacy of the bassoon while reimagining its accessibility for today’s musicians.
This is not a shortcut instrument.
It’s a new chapter in the evolution of wind instruments.
Who Is the Densoon For — And Why It Matters
Many amateur ensembles and orchestras struggle to find experienced bassoon players due to the instrument’s steep learning curve and cost. The Densoon addresses this gap.
Designed for woodwind players who want to double or transition, it allows saxophonists, flautists and clarinettists to play bassoon repertoire with far greater ease. Acoustically, it produces the same timbre as a traditional bassoon, meaning you can read directly from bassoon parts without years of specialist training.
The Densoon also has strong application in music education, making double-reed repertoire more accessible in schools, conservatoires and community ensembles.

The Densoon weighs approximately 2.2 lbs.
This is comparable to a traditional bassoon model. While it replaces conventional metal keywork, the integrated mechatronic system provides an equivalent overall weight, maintaining familiar balance and handling.
The current Densoon model is constructed from durable synthetic materials, offering stability across varying climates while delivering a rich, resonant bassoon tone.
-
The Densoon requires power to operate its assisted fingering system and electronics.
You can choose to run it using a standard 220V mains power supply, or via a rechargeable battery pack for greater freedom of movement during rehearsals and performance.
This flexibility allows the instrument to be used both in fixed studio settings and in live, mobile environments.
-
Standard classical cane reeds can be used with the instrument. However, we recommend synthetic reeds, which offer greater consistency, lower maintenance and immediate response.
Each Densoon is supplied with a synthetic resin reed as standard.
-
The Densoon is cleaned in much the same way as a traditional bassoon.
After each playing session, it is good practice to carefully dismantle the instrument, return it to its case, and dry the inside of the bore using the supplied pipe cleaners or swabs. This helps remove moisture and maintain the instrument’s performance and longevity.
