London Piano Teachers - Frequently Asked Questions

  • The cost of a piano lesson in London can vary depending on factors such as the teacher's experience, the lesson's length, and whether it's in-person or online. According to the Musician’s Union, the minimum rate for an hour lesson in 2025 should be £42.50, although in London it might be a slightly higher fee

  • You can start learning the piano at any age! There’s no age limit to learning the piano, whether you're a child or an adult.

While it might take a bit longer for adults to build the same level of flexibility or dexterity that children might have, adult learners may find they have better discipline, patience, and focus, which can be beneficial.

Ultimately, the key to success is consistent practice and finding the right teacher to guide you

  • The piano can be as easy or as difficult as you make it, and it largely depends on your goals, patience, and practice.

Some challenges will involve coordination, finger strength and independence, music reading skills and an understanding of music theory.

On the other hand, the piano’s logical layout, its immediate sound and its versatility can make it a easier instrument to learn compared to others

  • Yes, you can absolutely learn the piano online as well as in person. Both methods have their advantages and can work well, depending on your learning style and goals.

Online lessons give you the freedom to learn from anywhere and at a time that suits you; you can choose from teachers worldwide, giving you more options in terms of teaching style and experience, and it’s generally more affordable.

With in-person lessons, your teacher can physically guide your hands, correct posture, and provide real-time feedback in a way that's hard to do online. Plus teachers can demonstrate techniques and offer more structure.

At the end of the day it will just depend on whether you value flexibility and convenience or whether you prefer a more direct, hands-on teaching

  • The amount of practice needed to improve your piano playing depends on your goals, current skill level, and how quickly you want to progress. However, general guidelines would suggest 20-30 mins a day for beginners, 30-60 mins a day for intermediate students, and 1-2 hours a day for advanced players

  • If you don’t own a piano don’t panic, there are definitely still ways in which you can practice. For example, you could use a keyboard as a substitute: even a basic electronic keyboard can work and while it might not have the full range of keys or the touch sensitivity of a real piano, you can still practice finger placement, reading music, and basic techniques.

Or you could hire a piano practice room by the hour, which is often the best solution as it allows people to fully focus on practising. Woodwind London provides a practice room with an upright acoustic piano in Muswell Hill, which can be hired according to availability. Just drop us a line to find out more about pricing and dates.
