Kauri has formed a compassionate, patient, and encouraging teaching method. This includes bits and bobs from her biomedical engineering degree, and how physics plays a role in music-making and sound waves; her 15 years of ballet and contemporary dance training, linking to the importance of mind-muscle connection and how to play violin without stress and strain; her Suzuki Method violin training, and how your ears are your biggest ally when it comes to practising.

Central to this multi-disciplinary approach to teaching is patience, kindness, encouragement, and curiosity. Kauri believes that these four pillars are what produces a learning environment with zero judgement that allows for creativity to flow – which is what brought her to love music, and hopes that it will be what brings others to love music too.

London String Teachers - Frequently Asked Questions

  • The cost of a string instrument lesson can vary depending on factors such as the teacher's experience, the lesson's length, and whether it's in-person or online. According to the Musician’s Union, the minimum rate for an hour lesson in 2025 should be £42.50, although in London it might be a slightly higher fee

  • You can start learning a string instrument at almost any age! It really depends on the instrument you're interested in and your personal goals.

The main thing is to choose an instrument that feels exciting and comfortable for you. Some instruments, like the violin, can be a bit tricky for younger kids due to the size, but there are always adaptations to make learning easier.

There are also specialised teaching methods for younger students, and adults will find many learning resources available online.

  • String instruments can vary in difficulty depending on the instrument itself, your prior musical experience, and the amount of time and effort you're willing to put in. Generally, string instruments like the violin, cello, and harp each come with their own unique challenges.

Violin/Viola/Cello are often considered challenging for beginners because they require precise finger placement on the fingerboard (without the aid of frets), a good ear for pitch, and coordinated bowing. Learning proper technique and posture is crucial, and it takes time to develop finger strength and dexterity.

The harp can be tricky for some due to its complex mechanics and need for coordination of both hands and feet. You also need to learn how to use the pedals to change the pitch of certain strings, which adds an additional layer of complexity.

That said, with patience and consistent practice, you can definitely get better.

  • Yes, you can definitely learn string instruments both online and in-person. The choice between online or in-person lessons depends on your preferences, resources, and the type of learning experience you're seeking.

Pros of in-person learning can be: personalised instruction (a teacher can give you immediate, hands-on feedback), and social interaction (if you’re learning as part of a group, in-person lessons are a great way to meet other students and gain ensemble experience).

Whereas pros of online lessons can be: flexibility (you can choose lessons that fit into your schedule and often don’t need to travel), affordability (online lessons can sometimes be less expensive than in-person lessons because they save on travel costs for both you and the teacher), and a wide range of teachers (with online learning, you have access to teachers from all over the world, so you can find someone with the perfect teaching style and expertise).

  • The amount of practice needed to improve your playing depends on your goals, current skill level, and how quickly you want to progress. However, general guidelines would suggest 20-30 mins a day for beginners, 30-60 mins a day for intermediate students, and 1-2 hours a day for advanced players

  • You don’t have to own your own instrument, or certainly not to begin with while you’re still figuring out if you like it.

We offer a rental service for several string instruments at very competitive prices; it can be short or long term, giving you complete flexibility, and you will even have the option of buying the instrument further down the line.
